Our team is focussing on the initial experience of Jenny’s songs by the public through an immersive experience. Through our research we understand that not all children have the same methods of learning and information retainment. Therefore we decided to take a unique fun approach to this issue by designing an environment that caters to multidimensional learning, engaging visual, aural, kinaesthetic and reading/writing styles of learning. Pitching our idea to teachers the feedback we received was very positive and they believed that the interactiveness of the project would be really engaging for children and make it feel less like learning and more like play.
This will be the public’s first encounter of the songs and a way to raise awareness and encourage the use of maori language and culture among New Zealanders. According to the 2013 census only 3% of New Zealand’s population could hold a conversation in Te Reo Maori, the statistics also showed that those fluent in te reo maori were likely to be 65 years or older. By focussing on early childhood learners we are engaging with the future of our country and setting them on a path to continue our multicultural identity.
The space will generate sponsorship for the resources from those who are wanting to make a difference and create word of mouth promotion.

Through demographic research we decided on the locations of lower Cuba street and on the waterfront by Te Papa. We believe these two sites during Summer school holidays, events such as Matariki or even weekends would provide the right demographic and consistent foot traffic in order for the space to succeed.

The experience will consist of a shipping container fitted out with a tricaster which captures a live video of the children within the space and superimposes the feed onto an animation that you’ve just seen from our resource team on the large screen. Each individual te kotare song will have an animated video with the maori lyrics and illustrations of the story behind the song. This screen will virtually put the children amongst the song animations so they can dance within a te kotare world.

An information table will sit outside the container accompanied by volunteers who will inform parents and caregivers about the te kotare goal and project. If the parents are interested in sponsoring the resources for their childs school, this is where the information will be available for them. Our logistics team will be planning a launch event for those selected schools and centres to formally receive their resource packages.
This allows us to demonstrate how a unique approach to design can achieve a goal beyond the resource package you originally had in mind whilst also meeting your initial goals. This enables us to focus on a multidimensional approach to children’s learning styles to create a unique, fun, memorable experience within the package which engages all children’s learning needs.
We understand that the budget for our project is very important, as you are a not for profit project the money to fund our design is likely to come from donations, funding or sponsorship. With this in mind we have tried to make our solution one that would be viable to act on as a realistic venture. Through our budget we investigated the essential costs around container modification, transport, technical equipment, location and painting,
As with many aspects of the te kotare project this immersive space relies on people offering their skills and resources as koha to support the project.
The lower cost range of our budget sits around $4500, this can be achieved through a collaborative community effort pulling together resources and skills through Koha. The largest factor in our budget is the technical components. By working with community organizations these could be funded through sponsorship. This would give Te Kotare monetary assistance to make this design an achievable target.
Although this solution is of higher cost to implement we feel it is a unique and valuable concept that will be an effective and immersive way to get people involved with the songs.
I’ll now hand it back to Kelsey and Alesha for the logistics team.
